Greeting cards are visual and written packages of human emotion. We gift them to those we love like little time capsules that hold the memory and essence of our longing, our love, our despair, our quietness in the solemn moments. Toni Smalls uses this medium as an art form - creating spoken word poetry cards that highlight the raspiness of their voice and the mistakes in their written word. The front of the card holds visual art that corresponds with the written piece. The emotions that echo between the artist and the muse unravel themselves throughout the tactile portals.
Toni Smalls is a black trans and queer artist, art director, and curator in NYC. Born in the Bronx - Toni feels a deep love for marginalized communities and a duty to uplift and support them. Through curating, they are able to showcase the art of the great chosen family they’ve made. Their visual art is inspired by their poetry and feelings of isolation, uncertainty, despair, the home life; as well as power, lust, rage, and euphoria : themes quintessential to the human experience.
