ANCESTORS, 2021
Pomona based artist, Ashly Sypherd, has been cultivating her craft since 2016. Her works investigate the intersections of identity poltics as a Queer Multiracial woman; oftentimes referencing the past and present in the same breath. These intricacies lace together the complexities of race and sexuality from a raw intimate space. Using her background in Black Studies and Sociology; she applied historical tropes to modern scenes. In turn juxtaposition the unnatural with the natural. Her connections with her family's deep Southern Texan roots have greatly affected the trajectory of her works. Transcending strife is a consistent theme in her pieces. Paper has been a central medium in her works; it combines both organic and inorganic materials while illustrating the strained relationships between manufaction and cultivation within communities of color. It is in the dualities and polarities that her works reside; there is an aire of consistent discrete opposition within her works.
